Exactly.

All below is AFAIK:

- it appears there were some not-so-minor problems with gcc 2.96
- it was supposed to be a prerelease for 3.0
- 3.0.1 is out and likely will be included soon in new distros
  (and not only RedHat)

The reason RedHat pushed for 2.96 is because the gcc team was taking
too much time to get new releases out of the door, same as the egcs fork
few years ago.

Bugs will always be with us, at least within the current software
development framework (TeX is the notable exception), The problem
is not bugs but to know about them.

Windows, now that is confusing :-) win98, win98se, win2k, win2kpro, winxp ...
