Hi Will, The most common thing to fail on a CD writer is the laser burning out (I'm told).
Can it read CD's? If not this is probibly whats happened. If the unit is out of warranty, I'd suggest it would probibly be cheaper (in a sense - you'll have a faster writer) to buy a new one. Well, not cheaper, more worthwhile. If the unit is still under warranty and it's not broken because you got pissed off with it and threw it from a moving vechile, then take it back to where you got it from.
