Here's where it gets fun. When I use CClinux 1.5 (with a recopmiled 486 2.2.16-3 kernel) the CGA does not freak out when the screen gets cleared prior to the password prompt. This allows me to discover that the version of Linux on the HD is RH5.2 with a 2.0.36 kernel.
Is there something about his perhaps that stuffs CGA monitors on EGA cards? I have set the BIOS to deal with CGA monitors, BTW. It handles the CGA monitor fine, and so does Linux up to the point just before the password prompt. I can still login, but I can't see what I'm doing! Maybe I should try a console on the serial port.
