Hi-ho, I'm using RH Linux (7.1 and 7.2) on some 'current generation' AMD machines, 3 Durons and an Athlon, haven't had any problems. I've got one Gigabye M/B, but I don't think it's the one you're looking at.. My Athlon machine is a Soltek KV-75AV, and the Duron's are two FIC FC31's (I think...) and one Gigabyte which I can't remember the part # of..
On both I've used the i386 and i586 compiled kernels , I've not tried the i686 kernel, but I believe it should work on the athlon. For Rh7.2 they have an athlon specific kernel binary which haven't tried out yet. it's 2.4.9 One thing I will say is that on the Athlon the performance deficit between Win9X and kde is in the opposite direction, Win98se is noticeably faster than Redhat 7.1/KDE on my machine. Having said that, it's still damn quick, and I imagine if I upgrade to 7.2 and use the athlon kernel it will be faster still. For peripherals the Athlon detected the onboard sound (AC97) fine, and NIC/Video are PCI devices. The Durons on FIC M/B's are servers, and found all the onboard stuff OK, which was everything apart from the NIC. The Gigabyte has everything on board, and it works fine as a workstation with 7.2/Gnome on it.. Blah Blah Blah... Cheers, Chris Hellyar. Firstly the motherboard I think I'll get is a Gigabyte GA-7VTXH, it's pretty new and seems to be a good deal. It has onboard sound (Creative CT-5880) and onboard lan (Realtek 8100 10/100Mb) Does linux treat onboard hardware the same as say a pci realtec lan card? Or do I need special drivers for them? The rest of the hardware is pretty generic (GeForce2, Acer CDR) so should be fine. And does linux treat AMD as i386? I'm thinking about getting it from Dragon PC....I haven't got anything from them before....anyone have any good/bad experiences with them?
