They've tried to corner the PDA market and sort of failed, they tried to corner the enterprise server market and again sort of failed, they tried to enter the interactive TV market and so far not much is happening and they also tried to enter the video game market: to early to tell. So far trying to enter new markets have not been proved to be very successful for them (of course all this is debatable). I think what Vik had in mind was everyday software like OS, text editors/processors, spreadsheet etc., not specialized software. IMHO this kind of everyday software is well underway of being commoditized, Linux playing just a part in this (arguably a very big one).
