Start up your existing Mandrake, mount the first cdrom and go to this url:-

file:///mnt/cdrom/tutorial/index.html

Mandrake 8.1, to be superceeded by 8.2 any day now, virtually installs itself.
Just pop the first cd in the drive, boot the machine, and do as it tells you.
I'd suggest that to start with you don't install too many non-essential 
apps., you can easily add extras later.
