Experience suggests that it depends very much on the monitors. I had a Viewsonic E70 about 1cm away from an IBM G50 and they both showed irritation colour imbalances on the bottom inside corners, even with a couple of steel case sides between them. But I've seen a pair of 17" Philips monitors pushed hard up against each other with no ill effects. And various other combos too...
