'Hurro.. You're right there, about 99% of windows Networking is fairly simple to set up, and is pretty functional 'out of the box'. And the other 1% is so esoteric no one cares :-).
Same can be said for Linux though, once you can ping things and have name resolution the rest is plain sailing, within reason.
