Hi-ho, Just to whet a few appetites (or scare you off, one of the two...) Here is a basic outline of what I'll be doing on Monday next week at the LUG meeting.. Never fear, this isn't as bad as it sounds, I will not be dwelling in too much detail on any one part of this, I hope to cover enough ground to keep both the experienced users, and the novices awake :-).
Network basics: - A rough overview of IP networking - Routing, Subnetting, broadcasts, and some other waffle. - Hardware aspects of setting up a small LAN. - Network cards, hubs, etc. So, you want to build a Network? - Peer2Peer Vs Server based Networks. - Building a server. Workstations: - Setup basic networking, testing it. - DHCP vs fixed IP. - DNS vs hosts Services: - DNS, DHCP, NFS, NIS, Squid,Mail, Apache, mySQL, PHP - Dial on Demand firewalls vs ADSL Revisiting the Workstation end. - Samba - Windows client connecting to Linux the server and services. - Windows X Client And last, but not least: - Using boot rom based Xterms, with the LTSP distro. Cheers, Chris H.
