I came out of University about 5 years ago with a $30k+ student loan and I won't bore you with the details of how much more I'm making because of it. It was the foot in the door that put me on the path to higher paid positions and more responsibility. I still needed a lot of ability etc, but when someone who doesn't know you is going to hire you what are they going to judge you on?
