You want a guarantee and your using 802.11b?!? There is no way to make
that statement, all it takes is for someone block line of sight or
transmit over the top of you and your screwed and you have no legal
comeback. (unlike the 5gig stuff we use here at work which is licensed
for our use only)

Antenna cables should _ALWAYS_ be a short as possible, even decent cable
loses dB pretty badly, thus effecting range.

"clear line of sight" for 10 _MILES_ out of a can, yes that is
acceptable. I'm not talking a big honking costly yagi here, which will
still have some trouble with items in the way. 
 
(You did read the bit at the bottom where I said I wouldn't personally
use one for any distance didnt you?)

Added to other statements you have made and it seems pretty clear that
you are advocating buy before build all the way.
