What I have in mind is a simple vcr replacement (with the benefits of
digital recording like simultaneous viewing/recording) ...
maybe with an DVD player as added bonus.

But I don't just want to throw in some "spaghetti",
a minimally reasonable OSD + remote is really necessary.

I've not been able to locate anything suitable ("off-the-shelf").

"Some assembly required" doesn't scare me but I simply don't have
the spare time for a (major/serious) rewrite of the available software.

So I asked on this mailing list if anybody else have thought of it,
or attempted/know something I don't.
