I've had similar problems randomally (Savage chipset as well), but a blue screen rather than a green. I've got an updated savage driver from the 'net tho. I found the problems occur more in one desktop system than another, and logging out by ctrl-alt-backspace often causes the problem to start. I believe it's a colourmap issue. If ogle (or whatever you use) can't allocate it's full colourmap then it just wierds out.
