Cool, thanks for the tips (re: Xv etc), i'll try them out

The ACPI i'm using is a patch for the 2.4.18 kernel, in the kernel in General Setup
--> ACPI Support it gives the options:

[ ] ACPI Support
< > AC Adapter
< > Battery
< > Button
< > Fan
< > Processor
< > Thermal Zone
[ ] Debug Statements

(for which i have everythinhg selected except for debug statements).

And Debain has a package acpid, which shows eg:

steve@orion:~$ acpi
     Battery 1: unknown, 100%
steve@orion:~$ echo "steve unplugs his power"
steve unplugs his power
steve@orion:~$ acpi
     Battery 1: discharging, 99%, 10:02:31 remaining
steve@orion:~$

And acpi gives alot of info in /proc/acpi to do with battery and throttling the cpu
etc...

With this particular laptop APM seemed to be a lemon.... (unless i just had it set
wrong)... and the fan was always on, pumping out hot air. Whereas ACPI turns the fan
on and off accordingly. (Its really nice to sit reading stuff on screen with a
perfectly silent computer (ie: when the fan is off)).

So, yeah, just thought you might like to know about ACPI. I'd be more helpful and tell
you the url for the patch, but i dont know it. I just got it off a mate who (has the
same laptop and) already figured out what to do.

The files are called:

acpi-20020404-2.4.18.diff.gz
kacpid.patch

I'm sure google will reveal all, but if anybody wants to steal the patches off me yer
more that welcome (they're small, 425k for both).

Cheers,
Steve
