One needs to be mindful that many modems .. even pcmcia ones are winmodems ..
this may be the case here - a little difficult to know without the model / etc of the modem concerned I'd go with Chris's suggestion to find out the device type (since it may not identify itself initially as a "modem") Good Luck!
