The only lockups I've encountered with Linux have been either X-related (not X-rated, although my language occasionally was), or my own fault, due to screwing around with the hardware. Echoing oddball commands to /dev/modem as root did the trick once. The important stuff (kernel, apache, etc) has always been rock-solid for me - my server is headless so I don't even install X!
