Thats Veroboard.  Icky stuff but we all use it.  Dick Smith sells some slightly better 
Veroboard which has gaps etched into the tracks.  This saves you having to cut 
the tracks yourself, plus its pre-tinned so corrosion isn't an issue.

I can't help with the custom designed pcb's, although I have been wanting to kit 
myself up for it for over 10 years now.
