The sado-masochistic element in their use becomes pleasurable after about half an hour. "The Peter Norton's Unix" book available from the public library has a very good chapter about vi, and the latest release of vim has a very comprehensive set of lessons built-in. just say ':help' and vim will leave her dominatrix mode and become quite civil.
