From my limited experience with Lilo, I would suggest two things:

 > On boot, all that comes up on the screen is L for Lilo,

* At start-up, each letter displayed on screen from the word 'LILO'
represents a certain stage of the boot process, so if you only have an
'L' it's failing pretty early. The Lilo docs (or Google :) ) should help
you work out what stage it's at.

 > The only thing I can think of, is, does
 > the /boot partition need to be at the front of hda??

* What size is the hard-drive? For certain Lilo version/hard-drive
combos this is an issue. From memory it's something to do with LBA (Long
block addressing?) mode. Basically if boot partition isn't within 1024
cylinders(?) of the start of the drive it can't find it. Find a Lilo
HOW-TO/FAQ which mentions large hard drives.

Actually, I just noticed you're trying dual boot Windows XP, I have a
vague recollection that later Windows versions are kinda picky about who
"owns" the MBR. I'd check-out a Windows-XP dual boot HOW-TO for details.

Hope is some help,

Phil.
