I'm having a problem connecting to my ISP, maxnet. They don't know what
the problem is. Linux is officialy unsupported by them (incidentally,
they only told me that *after* I had problems, even though I was very
upfront about using Linux all the time and it all seemed OK.

Actually the modem connects to maxnet fine. I get a login: prompt, and,
if I'm doing it manually, I can sit there and casually type in my
username. The connection is up. As soon as I hit enter, the connection
is dropped.

I have two modems, a 28.8 ISA (Zoom) and a 56K PCI (HSF). The 56K modem
used to work properly. I didn't try with the 28.8 previously, but both
exhibit the same problem now. The 28.8K will successfully connect to a
modem at university (also 28.8K) , and the connection is not dropped.
The 56K modem is not able to establish a connection with the 28.8K modem
at university, and never has been able to. I seem to be the only
customer reporting this problem.

I'm considering another ISP. I only need about 10hrs a week dial-up and
a few mailboxes. I collect my CLUG email from here at work. Any
suggestions about the problem or an alternative ISP?

Cheers,
Carl.
