_HCF_?  AAAARGH!  

They are diabolical to try to use with Linux, the reason being that the 
driver software is usually kept firmly under lock and key, and the only time 
I tried to use one in Linux, it crashed the system.

In short, you wasted your money with that.  "winmodems" are a waste of time 
and money unless you using one that has had a driver specifically written for 
Linux and continuously updated.  (Or opensourced - that way it can be updated 
without hassle.)

External modems work well.
