Fixed proper! The original problem was the machine with the nfs shares on it is only on my local "illegitimate" LAN and cant look up the IP's of connecting machines until NAT/MASQ is enabled on my legitimate machine.
An entry in /etc/hosts for the machine attempting to mount fixed all. I noticed this again when I upgraded my legit box to RH8.0 which of course didnt have the required iptables rules in the iptables script! Now ssh connects more quickly as well, ok so I goofed and it was a name resolution problem, who would have thought nfs and ssh required reverse lookups. Mark (Gnome2 is very prudy)
