Compaq is good in my experience. The only models that are bad are Presarios which are aimed at the home user. I have a concerto (486 laptop) and three prosignias (a 486 and two P150s) all running linux fine. The raid arrays of the prosignias are supported directly. One of the P150s is now running FreeBSD, fairly well too despite my lack of knowledge.
