Andrew Tarr is on permanent record as saying:
:
:I'm considering buying a laptop, if my finances will stretch. My sole
:requirement (beyond the obvious things everyone wants, like
:reliability and *as much power as possible*) is that it run linux
:well, although a DVD drive would be nice also.
:
:I'm in Canada at the moment, as you may know, but it sounds like I
:*might* be coming back for a couple of weeks at the end of November,
:so it's possible that I might be able to get something in NZ if
:something good crops up.
:
:However, mostly at this stage I'd like brand/model
:recommendations. Is it worth considering the second-hand market?

Can you trust a second hand laptop? A lot of pieces are integrated, and
hard to replace if you have problems. When I came here from Canada, I
bought a Dell before I left, with a warrantee which would be recognised
worldwide. (Good thing, too. My DVD drive behaves like a spoiled
teenager.)

:I guess I was hoping to spend not much more than $1,100 CAD, which is
:around the $1,500 NZD mark.

That might be difficult for a decent laptop. They tend to be priced
high both new and used.
