I personally like having my main personal directory (/root if I'm being
bad, more likely /home) on a separate mount point - that way, when I
inevitably destroy the main file system, it's less likely to be affected.
There is a school of thought that says that /tmp should be on a separate
mount mount, mounted with execute and suid permissions off. OTOH, I
ususally put all the normal stuff in a single partition, and the user data
spread out elsewhere.
