Hi,
I thought I might quickly mention that I have been playing with VOCP - a
linux answerphone - for the last two weeks. Installation was
straightforward enough for me _once_ I got my head around vgetty config and
sound related issues. I've been tweeking it here and there and now that
it's working to my satisfaction I'm happy for it to answer my phone.
A couple of points about it though... it provides a level of sophistication
that's unnecessary for the average home user and you can't seem to make it
unsophisticated! Secondly, there doesn't appear to be any caller ID
functionality. Third, if you don't check your messages remotely, the
desktop message announcer is unfriendly and there's no tool for graphical
alert. I'm thinking about writing a script to toggle the Scroll Lock on
and off when there's unplayed messages in the incoming message directories.
There's a neat feature that will email you when you get a message. I'm
playing with that at the moment, the problem is that with a dialup
connection I had to write a script to dialin and clear Sendmail's
queue. That way I get an email at work when a message is recorded at home.
Regards,
Michael.
