Yes - you asked for a solution that "preserves XP and has the least room for error" Since you want to teach redhat, which requires a hard drive you will need to either modify the XP install, or store redhat somewhere else. Is a netboot feasable, or is it too different compared to a "standard" linux install? How about a bootable redhat CD?
