Hi Bryce - new user myself and I'm wrestling with winmodems at the moment -
so a few thoughts from the front line.
Winmodems are modems with a variety of brandnames - and based on chipsets
(like PCTEL) that are designed exclusively for use with M$ windows OS's.
www.linmodems.org and it's associated mailing list is an invaluable tool
when it comes to getting expert advice on how to work around winmodem
installation and configuration problems.
The good news is that there are some utilities that are freely available
and really good howto files that can help you overcome winmodem issues.
Linmodems are resources (drivers and such) for common winmodems that linux
gurus have written to make the lil' buggers work under linux distros.
Bottom line is - buy a replacement modem (external's as the wise on this
list will tell you make most sense).

Can someone please explain to me what is meant by a 'winmodem'?
What is different about it from non-winmodems?
I have a serial modem at home. It works with windows (does that make it a
winmodem?) and linux.

[ Ignorance use to be bliss (but not when trying to make a Linux install
work as expected - maybe I was mislead by the media - got the impression
that linux was at the point of ease of use that if you could install
windows
os you'd find it just as easy to install linux os. -the install was easy
but
getting everything running afterwards is no where near easy. :( ]
