:Tim's reccomended listning guide (because he's done *two* history of
:electronic music shows on RDU this year):
:
:Hip Hop: try Jurassic 5 or A Tribe Called Quest. Michael Franti for very
:funky political stuff (he's very good, but probably too funky to be hip
:hop). For local stuff, try King Kapisi, Che Fu, or P Money.

I never really pinned Jurassic 5 for Hip Hop, but I definitely found
that listenable. It's been ages since I heard A Tribe Called Quest, but
then I wasn't interested...

I walked into a music store the other day and put on the new Bootsy
Collins disc. He's all funk, but it was performed by a bunch of hip
hop/R&B musicians. I was trying to figure out why I like funk but shy
away from hip hop. I still don't know...

:House: hmm, don't know much about house. Mr Fingers (aka Larry Heads) does
:really old house. Remix magazine's best of house (I saw it at echo records
:for $14 today) is really good deep house (I should really get a copy).
:Orb's "Adventures beyond the ultraworld" is ambient house. local? try
:Cuffy, Leon D, Phully.

Hmm. I can get behind ambient, though. It seems to travel a bit more
than house. My big problem with a lot of music is that you have a 5
minute song based on a 10 second hook that drawn out _way_ more than
it's worth. House seems to be the embodiment of this. <rant>Oh, and
those damn straight-16th buildups that last for 4 measures. Pisses me
off to no end.</rant>

:Trip Hop (It's my favourite genre): DJ Shadow is a listening requirement.
:Depth Charge are one of my favs at the mo. Wagon Christ is outstanding.
:local stuff: Minuit (they have 2 EPs out). If you get a chance to see
:Auckland DJ Chris Cox play, then go.

I have to agree with you on DJ Shadow. Interesting stuff happens. :)

:Trance: Paul Okenfold, Sasha, John Digweed.

BT is pretty big in my books, too.

:Drum and Bass/Jungle: Plug, Aphex Twin, Amon Tobin. local: conficius.

This is what I like. Amon Tobin has to be one of the most interesting
musicians this side of Bill Laswell.

:Ambient: Brian Eno, Aphex Twin, Orb

This is turning into a shopping list of music I really can't afford...
At least I already have some Aphex Twin.

:Techno: Carl Craig, Luke Slator.
:
:Ambient Techno: Plasticman

I've lost any idea as to what Techno is anymore. It was always an
umbrella over electronic for me. But then I started actually listening
to it.

Others:

Squarepusher
Micronaut
Boards of Canada
Retina

I'm trying to leave out anyone who'd be more industrial. Retina might
be pushing it a bit.
