Well it all depends on how fast your connection is? What do you want to do in the way of filtering? I use a very old 25MHz '486 with 16Megs RAM and about 170Megs of disk space and it works very well. The squid cache and the snort IDS are both on, but I am not filtering the WWW feed for objectional material. The connection is 128kbits, and there are 2 ip services forwarded to two different destination machines. Having the squid cache in place saves us about 200Mbytes in traffic each month.
