There is no need to be, it's not that difficult, but now-a-days the only real reason for learning vi(m) is that it is virtually always installed on any and all Unix machines. However you could use either pico or nano on a terminal, or in an X window there is gedit, kate, or cooledit, or ( heaven forbid -- I really don't want to start an "Editor Flamefest" ) emacs.
