smbstatus tells you what files are in use, this is a pretty good approximation to who is logged in, especially with drives in use.
Latest versions may be better :-)

Is there a way to tell either/or how many or which users (ie client

Do you want a linux or a windows answer?

Windows: Run server manager (srvmgr.exe) and click on the machine then
on the Users button. Mine only shows the MACHINE account logged in, but
I don't actually use users - everyone is a guest.

Linux: dunno sorry.
