Kevin, your question was: "if you were recomending a distributon to some one who is new to Linux, which one would you recomend".
This assumes they haven't installed it yet. If you already have a distro installed, stick to that. After getting comfy with that one, you might look at trying others, but by then you won't be a newbie any more. I would personally not recommend mandrake because I don't know what I'd be recommending - I've never used MDK. OTOH I would qualify my recommendation of distro X with "I recommend X because I use it with no bother, but feel free to ask someone who uses Y how they find Y." To people who haven't got a computer yet, and don't know much about them, I tell them - buy a Mac if you can afford one.
