You are quite correct LDAP does not compare to directories - it is not a directory, but rather an Access Protocol [Lightweight Directory Access Protocol]. It has also been firmly adopted by Novell [e.g. Novell Portol Services uses LDAP for directory communication] and Microsoft, whom peddle ADS as fully LDAP compliant
