Personally I am an extremist, I would never consider a close source driver for myself. > Have you tried to get an ATI mobility UMA thing working? (a-la most > modern compaq laptops) I am not in the market now but when I was, almost 2 years ago, I was looking for a laptop which would work with Linux. Inspiron 8k was the one. Got almost everything working except TV output on the ATI card (and there to some extent is not ATI's fault and to some extent I made it work, just didn't like it). So, under normal circumstances you could make it work. If you are a game junkie then a console may serve you better. Laptops are still more tricky then desktops. There are 2 possibilities there: - your employer is buying them, tough luck, try frame buffers, etc. (IIRC ATI have released some drivers recently) - you are buying it in which case shop before you buy ... and don't complain. Don't like it ? Don't buy it! Cheers, -- Ryurick M. Hristev mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Computer Systems Manager University of Canterbury, Physics & Astronomy Dept., New Zealand
