A big thank you to all of you who shared their experience and gave comments on this! Since all the different modes one printer can use, and the ability of the driver to support these modes, can obviously make quite a difference, I got the actual gimp-print (4.2.4) and compiled and installed it. I checked which print modes it claims to support for some of the Epson colour printers, and it looks quite impressive. This alone, of course, does not say much about the quality of the results. But I just tried the driver of the new gimp-print on my old HP LaserJet II with some photos - what a difference as compared to the driver that came with gimp 1.2.2! This, and a look at the change log of gimp-print, showed me very clearly that getting the most recent gimp-print helps a lot! Once I get a colour printer, I will report further...
