I never tried to print from gimp, as I want full control of margins and placement, even more so when dealing with expensive ink and paper. My general experience with that kind of control through Linux GUI apps' printer dialogs is not a good one. I found it faster to write a quick LaTeX wrapper (or use something like pnmtops), which also allowed me to preview before printing. The way I'd describe it is cups doesn't force all printing through postscript as the common format interface, but uses a bitmapped format instead for output to non-ps printers. It still uses ghostscript to rasterise postscript input (again for non-ps printers).
