Perhaps your problem processes were in the 'D' state - an uniterruptible sleep 
state. They might be waiting on a resource that never becomes available and 
are therefore deadlocked. You cannot kill such processes (of course you can 
reboot).  I've had xmms do this to me a few times, and mount occasionally 
does it too.
