Hi there,

I'm relatively new to Linux, and I've got three wee problems
right now.

1. I cannot get SANE to talk to my Epson Perfection 1260 USB
scanner. It can be seen easily by USB Devices, I have trouble
   installing the appropriate backend...

2. I cannot install Mplayer (RPM versions from net). There are
a few dependency issues, although I believe I already have the
right libs needed already. I'd like to get this one going since
the video apps supplied by my MDK 9.0 dist haven't managed to
play even simple MPEG-1 videos yet...

I'd be quite happy to drag my PC over to anyones house or drag
anyone over to my house just to see firsthand what I need to do
to get these working, since I have found all attempts at emailed
instructions hopeless so far (dependency, wrong file location, and
a few other issues that are annoying to explain via the keyboard!

I'm running a pre-installed MDK 9.0/KDE 3.03 dist on an 1100MHz
Duron, 256MB RAM, 64MB video on 19" screen, 20GB disk. The whole
package is the 'Terminator 1100' package sold by Dick Smith...

The 3rd problem is a little different. The video chip in my beastie
is an integrated S3 Savage4 (internal AGP 4x) that uses shared RAM
(can use 64MB, don't need that much unless 3D stuff is needed).
Dick Smith advertise the machine as having 2D/3D acceleration. I
totally agree with the 2D part (X11 2D is very fast), but 3D hardware
acceleration is not working. I have found that S3 Savage4 DRI drivers
do not exist (and will not unless someone steps up to the plate!).
Dick Smith offered me a refund on the PC, which I politely declined.
They then spent 2-3 weeks researching the issue, after which I was
told yesterday (30/1/03) that they were WRITING an XFree86 DRI driver
for the Savage4. Writing an XFree DRI driver is not apparently for the
faint-of-heart, so what do I do?...

A) Believe them, and wait for the driver release? </Skepticism?>

B) Ask them to buy me a nice ATI Radeon 7500 VE All-In-Wonder?
(which will work incredibly well with my existing XFree drivers!)

C) Take them to Fair Go / Consumer / Cleaners etc...?

TIA for your replies, sorry about the length of scrawl here! :^(

Kind regards,
