Best bet to get mplayer up and running on Mandrake 9.0
is to go to http://plf.zarb.org/ and follow the
instructions about urpmi.

Then as root or su at the command line while connected
to the internet simply type " urpmi mplayer "
It should hop onto the web and download mplayer and
all the dependences for you.

Heres the instructions on how to do it any way (save
you a trip to plf).

You'll need to be connected to the web to do this.
as Root or SU at a commandline (this can be done
through a GUI but this is quicker to explain) Type

urpmi.addmedia plf ftp://ftp.easynet.fr/plf/cooker
with hdlist.cz
urpmi lynx
lynx -source http://plf.zarb.org/plf.asc | gpg
--import
urpmi mplayer

Then once it's finished doing what ever it's doing log
out and then in again and Mplayer should be added to
your multimedia list.
During this you'll need the install cd's a couple of
times.

Or you could install xine off the install cd's you
have that's a fairly good player and plays pretty much
every thing Mplayer does.
If you reall want to get support for all movie file
types you shold install mplayer from source. Still the
mplayer that the above commands installs should play a
couple of dozen different movie files and dvd's. If
you want Quicktime support though you have to compile.
