Hi all,

I recenly upgraded to a blazingly fast 56k modem.  Dynalink 1456VQE-C;
the "e-modem". Its a cheap RS-232 external modem.

Unfortunately its been having occasional problems holding the connection
up; after a while it just hangs up and won't reconnect properly (it
starts to handshake then suddenly all I hear is a tone). Cycling the
power on/off seems to fix it.

I am 99% sure my ISP is not at fault. RTFM and modifying the init string
did not help (I even added an ATZ prior to sending the init string).

I think it may be a thermal problem as it seems to misbehave more on hot
days. Tonight its been worse than ever. So I have hung it precariously
behind my server so the PSU fan is blowing into the ventilation slots on
the bottom, from a sufficient distance to prevent airflow restriction of
course. The PSU exhaust is cool and the fan-forced air will be a far
more effective coolant than natural convection anyway. This is only a
temporary arrangement and if it works I'll think about a more elegant
solution.

Before I did that it lasted 35 mins, then 12 mins, then 6 minutes. Now
its been up for 50 minutes and counting. Fingers crossed.

Has anyone else had similar trouble with this model modem? As mine is
connected to my server I leave it switched on 24/7.

Cheers,

- Dave
