Ok, am reinstalling SAMBA to get a clean samba.conf file, then will play with the copy and try and get it going. Had already used SWAT (oops) by the time I wrote the email.

I'll keep ya'll updated...

Cheers

Hi all,

I have installed samba and it all went smoothly. This is on my work box.
I am using swat to configure it (unless someone can recommend something
better/easier).

I know you'r going to hate this, but honestly you are much better off editing
the samba config file by hand using your text editor of choice. Swat produces
mangled files. By mangled I mean that they havn't everything correct, and it
removes the very useful comments out of the file.

This is the situation. I am on a small LAN running off
of our main adsl modem/router. I want to be able to browse the Windows
clients and for them to be able to browse me. One is a Win98 box, 2 are
Win2K boxes, with 4 various apple boxes just for good measure. What I
want to know is, (the shorthand version please) how do I set samba so
that my /home directory is viewable/usable by the other clients on the
network??

Mention it as the PUCLIC directory in the config file, and ensure the
permissions are correct so that Samba daemon can read your files.
Total madness imho, but you did ask.

SMBD is running as is NMBD. I need the other clients to be able to copy
data from my home directory to their drives and visa versa.

Make sure you have both the daemons running.

Any help appreciated. At the moment, the error on the the win boxen says
that they do not have permission to access the resource, though they can
see my group, which by default is Mdkgroup.

I also would like to be able to easily modify my shares in konqueror if
possible on the fly so that if I need to temporarily make other
drives/directories available on the network, I can do so.

It'll do that as soon as you get the permissions correct.

OTTOMH / IIRC
Provided the daemons are running:
http://localhost:901/
will give you a beautiful manual for Samba.
