Another suggestion, emoticons are all the rage, why not Tuxicons for the linux people?! :^)
Imagine Tux laughing in tears, rolling on the floor, clutching his belly instead of seeing "LOL" or all the other 'shortenings'...
Animated GIF format would do it I think!!
