I just mounted the folder on my tutors server as a samba volume
should i have been able to copy to and from the windows server without doing this?

There was no obligation to reply.


My answer would be no. (probably similar to mounting a floppy before you can use it.)
There are programs to help with the mounting like LinNeighbourhood and komba2.
Not forgetting the commands smbmount and smbumount.
I suspect you can also do it automatically on bootup by adding a line in the /etc/fstab file.
