You are right, the new ML 9.1 does indeed resize fat32 and NTFS partitions and I've heard of people having good results so far with it.
I agree'd with your method as well, that is how I would do it.

Chris,
Here is what I would do:
How do I give back the 1Gb partition to Windows?
Boot up using Mandrake 9.1 install disk 1. Start the install on /dev/hdb as normal. When you get to the Hard Drive Partitioning bit, select Custom Partitioning and click on the "hda" tab. Delete the 1GB partition and then resize the Windows partition to use the rest of the space. Click on the "hdb" tab and set up your Mandrake partitions. Continue the installation as normal.
I have read somewhere that Mandrake 9.1 can resize FAT32 and NTFS partitions. NOTE: You should take a backup of any important data on your Windows partition before resizing it.
Other than root, swap and home, should I have any other directory on a seperate partition?
That should be fine for a desktop system.
