Caution, a shameless plug for Gentoo follows.

If he had installed a modern distribution and issued this line:-

emerge celestia

He would have had the whole kit and kaboodle going in the proverbial "10 
minutes", instead of all this unmitigated bother caused by the inadequate rpm 
system. This charade is proof positive isn't it?

I did, and I must say celestia is really quite interesting.
