Obviously, you need to configure cups on each machine to be able to print to its respective printer. Next you have to set up both those cups as servers, and then add a queue on each to forward to the respective other cups server. The web-based cups admin interface was quite good, though I've never set up a cups server yet. Of course both machines need to reach each other on the network, so you need to allow incoming connections on the cups port on both machines. If you aren't sure what you're doing turn all packet filters off until the cups thing works. Yes if someone hacks your modem your internal network is unprotected (a transparent bridge modem and a separate firewall helps). Of course if someone hacks your firewall, ... I always set up a firewall on each machine as a matter of course.
