This could be a long shot - newbie alert! In the snipped output 
from lsmod was there a line something like; 

scsi_mod              106552   4  [sr_mod ide-scsi initio sd_mod]
                                                   ^^^^^^^

Did it contain the ide-scsi module as mine does? If not, and if
your cdwriter is in fact an ide drive, you should check your 
grub.conf or lilo.conf and make sure the kernel is being passed
something like 'hdd=ide-scsi' where hdd is the ide device label 
for your cdwriter.
