It's definitely doable, and a good idea.

You might get some hints from these files:

In particular, the ~/.gnome-env file, which is sourced from my ~/.bashrc
to set my PATH and LD_LIBRARY_PATH (...the same sort of thing should
work for your home-brewed KDE).
