So they're really just looking at the toolchain/compiler & how it works?
Try having a play about with Kdevelop or Anjuta, two very good IDEs for C/C++.  Any OS 
specific stuff that they need (like finding files) should be easy to resolve with a 
quick google.
Are you using any GUI APIs?  If so, check out QT or wxwindows - both are cross 
platform GUI APIs
